Middle & High School Projects

kindness stations

A high school set up kindness stations through which students rotated,

assembling survival kits for local unhoused individuals,
making paper baskets and filling them with goodies for independent living residents,
baking dog treats for the local animal shelter,
building a picnic table and donating it to a local independent living facility,
practicing kindness skills like saying please and thank you, holding the door for someone, and learning to ignore certain behaviors of others rather than becoming angry and starting an argument,
and participating in yoga to be kind to themselves.

operation golden wish

A middle school teacher empowered students to plan, execute, and follow-through with all the legwork involved in performing service projects, acts of kindness. The students practiced how to engage in a discussion, ask questions, and find things in common. The students were paired up with a nursing home resident and in the hour they spent together they took notes of some wishes the residents wanted, things they missed having by living in their new homes, The class then went to Wal-mart and bought just about everything on their wish list, from candy, to t-shirts, to toys, posters, and so much more, and returned to surprise the residents.

A high school group put on a Kindness Activity Fair on the downtown square. They invited community members to come and participate in stations, including getting free hot dogs, chips and water, getting free movie theater popcorn, learning basic American Sign Language signs, petting a therapy dog along with getting a bookmark listing ways to be kind to yourself, making bracelets or bookmarks with positive affirmations, and a donation table for the local animal shelter and food bank.

survival kits

A high school class purchased items and assembled survival kits for students experiencing a difficult life event, like homelessness, a house fire, a death in the family, etc. They gave the kits to the school counselor to disperse privately to students in need.

Cookies For patients

A high school class sent treats to the patients at the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield. They used the website for Crumble Cookies and chose the kinds of cookies and figured the amounts of each cookie they could get with the amount they had to spend.

pay it forward

A middle school holds a "Pay It Forward" day for the 6th graders every year. The students rotated through stations where they make a craft to give to a deserving group (ie. paper cranes with notes of appreciation for the air national guard unit nearby, painted signs for a nursing facility), wrote compliment cards, read stores to elementary reading buddies, practiced yoga as a kindness to themselves, and painted kindness rocks.

Welcome kits

A first grade class assembled welcome kits for students who transfer to the school midyear. They included basic school supplies, handmade fuzzy guys to clip onto a backpack , and handwritten welcome cards.

kindness club

An elementary school started a kindness club that students attend during their lunch hour or after school. They have decorated Halloween bags for children in the hospital, provided and served a hot chocolate bar for staff,

inclusion is kind

A second grade class read and discussed books about kindness and inclusion. Then the class worked together with a class of differently abled students to complete some fun spring themed STEM activities! These two classes have recess together every day, so this was a wonderful way to encourage the students to be kind and always include everyone!

splat the cat

A kindergarten class read the book , "Splat the Cat: Oopsie Daisy," then decorated pots and planted daisies. When their daisy pots were ready, they read the book together on Zoom with a kindergarten class in another school. The students in the other class were gifted the daisies in decorated pots and all of the students got their own copy of the book.
